Profesor de Sociología en la University of Tasmania, Australia. Es investigador principal del proyecto Discovery del Australian Research Council «Religious freedom, LGBT+ employees, and the right to discriminate». Entre sus libros se encuentran LGBT Christians (2017, con Bronwyn Fielder), Sex, Death, and Witchcraft (2014) y Teenage Witches (2007, con Helen Berger).
