Honorary Professor at the University of Exeter, he has authored over thirty books on World War II, air power, and the dictatorships of Hitler and Stalin. The Bombing War won a Cundill Award in 2014, and Blood and Ruins: The Last Imperial War 1931-1945 received the Duke of Wellington Medal for military history.
