On March 7, 1965, 600 Black civil rights protesters led by Hosea Williams (at right front in dark raincoat) and John Lewis (at right in light-colored coat) crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. They were met by state troopers and local police, who gave them a two-minute warning to disperse. When the protesters refused, officers tear-gassed and beat them, resulting in over 50 hospitalizations.
